Though the exact cause of hyperhidrosis is unknown, having overactive sweat glands seems to be hereditary. An estimated five percent of the world’s population is thought to struggle with this condition, making it a problem that impacts more than 360 million people.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Simply put, hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes uncontrollable sweat gland activity. This can lead to stained clothing, odor problems, and physical discomfort and increased chafing.

While significant sweating can be tied to weight, certain medications, hormone shifts, and underlying medical conditions, “primary focal hyperhidrosis” is independent of these factors. The apparently genetic condition can cause sweating on the hands, feet, scalp, and underarms.

What Can Be Done About Excessive Sweating?

Many patients have already tried many over-the-counter solutions for their condition before visiting Dr. Peterson Pierre. Some individuals may benefit from a prescription solution, while others require a different medical dermatology treatment:

Drysol Solution

Hyperhidrosis may be controlled with the use of a prescription topical medicine applied directly to the areas of concern. It is not available over the counter and so requires a prescription. This is one of the simplest ways to try to control excessive sweating when even the strongest antiperspirants fail to work. Drysol solution is stronger and more effective than anything available at a drug store.

BOTOX®

Another solution for hyperhidrosis is BOTOX® injections to keep sweat glands from over-functioning. This is not a long-term solution, as it needs to be re-injected roughly every six months to continue to control the condition.

QBREXZA®

These towelettes contain a special solution that disrupts sweat glands’ neurotransmitters, keeping them from producing sweat as they typically do. Patients wipe a prescription cloth under their arm once a day. Within four weeks, sweat production should slow.

Robinul Tablets

Oral medication such as Robinul is approved by the FDA and can be used to reduce sweating throughout the body. This may be helpful for patients who have hyperhidrosis of the head, hands, or feet.

Iontophoresis

Some hyperhidrosis patients are good candidates for electric currents applied to the problem area. This treatment introduces ionic medicinal compounds directly into the skin to address the problem.

miraDry®

This treatment option uses microwave energy beams to target sweat glands in the underarms, disabling them for good. Because only a small fraction of the body’s sweat glands are found in the armpits, miraDry® does not impede your ability to sweat properly elsewhere and cool down in the future.

Surgery

Surgical treatment, though effective, is used as a last resort because of the inherent risks of surgery and the fact that it may result in compensatory sweating from other areas of the body.
