BOTOX Injections: How Do They Work?

BOTOX® injections have soared in popularity since they were first introduced for cosmetic use in 2002. Chances are you’ve at least heard about this treatment, and you probably even know someone who has had the injections—but how do they work?

BOTOX® injections are designed to reduce facial wrinkles and fine lines. They can also be used to treat other issues. In fact, BOTOX® currently treats more than twenty various medical conditions—and even more applications are being explored.

When BOTOX® is injected into the facial skin, the underlying muscle is relaxed. The treatment achieves this by preventing signals from nerve cells from reaching the muscle. With these signals blocked, the muscle can longer contract, which relaxes and softens wrinkles. The result is reduced depth of frown lines and wrinkles, as well as an overall smoother appearance of the facial skin.

The treatment is most frequently used on forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. BOTOX® injections usually only take just minutes to complete, with full effects becoming visible in days. You can generally expect the effects of BOTOX® to last for multiple months. As the muscle regains movement, you may notice some wrinkles begin to reappear. Over time, though, regular BOTOX® injections may even prevent new wrinkles from forming—meaning each reappearance will become more and more subtle.

Patients are able to return to most all of their normal activities immediately after receiving the injections. As such, treatments are convenient, even for those with busy lifestyles.

BOTOX® is continuing to increase in popularity because of its effectiveness and versatility. The treatment can be used preventatively, to stop lines and wrinkles before they become bothersome, or retroactively, after fine wrinkles have already appeared.
