Why Does BOTOX® Treat Only Certain Types of Wrinkles?
One of the most popular treatments available at Pierre Skin Care Institute is BOTOX®. Injections at our Westlake Village-based practice are used to smooth facial lines to give patients a refreshed and more relaxed look that lasts for months, making it a commonly requested option. While the wrinkle-relaxer is highly effective at targeting specific lines—such as the 11’s that form between the brows—there are better options for addressing other types of wrinkles, such as parenthesis lines that develop next to the mouth and nose.
Why is one treatment better for one type of facial line than another? Read on to learn more.
Dynamic Wrinkles
Certain facial wrinkles and lines develop due to the ongoing muscle contractions that help us to move the different parts of our face, especially when making expressions. These are known as “dynamic wrinkles,” so named because dynamic means “constant change or activity.”
The routine facial motions that pull our skin into folds eventually cause those creases to etch deeper and remain visible, even when the face is at rest. Happily, keeping those muscles at rest means the related wrinkles are less visible, since reduced contractions mean a smoother surface. The main dynamic wrinkles that can be treated with BOTOX® are horizontal lines on the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows, and web-like crow’s feet extending from the eye corners.
Static Wrinkles
Something that is static by definition lacks movement or change. Thus, static wrinkles are lines that form apart from routine muscle contractions. A result of intrinsic aging, static wrinkles develop as the skin loses healthy subcutaneous fat, collagen, and other elements over time. This loss causes creases to form due to the hollow spaces beneath the surface. Treatment with a dermal filler reintroduces volume for a smoother and more even look. The main static wrinkles that can be treated with injectable dermal fillers are nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
