How Does CoolSculpting® Work?
To understand how CoolSculpting® works, it’s important to first understand a little bit about fat. Bulky bulges are caused not by a loose liquid, but by collections of fat cells that have grown in size as the body has brought in more calories than it has burned.
Losing weight—a healthy choice—does not get rid of these fat cells. Instead, successful diet and exercise plans prompt the body to use some of the fat stored in the cells for energy. As a result, the cells shrink. Unfortunately, there are two problems with this strategy for anyone who wants to enjoy specific cosmetic results.
First, you can’t control which cells shrink and which don’t. That’s why people who limit themselves to salads for months may see their numbers go down on the scale, but still deal with larger-than-desired thighs or an obvious gut.
Second, a change that causes more calories to come in than are burned will trigger the cells to begin storing more fat again. This will cause them to grow.
CoolSculpting® addresses both of these issues.
The CoolSculpting® device takes advantage of the fact that different tissues are impacted by temperature changes in unique ways. Cold harms fat before it negatively impacts skin, muscle, and other cells, so freezing fat cells by chilling a localized region of the body is an effective way to target fat—and only fat.
Once the fat cells crystalize during a CoolSculpting® treatment, the body begins to break them down in a process known as cryolipolysis. This natural fat removal process plays out over months. The result is a slimmer area due to fewer fat cells, not just smaller ones.
Fat cells cleared out by CoolSculpting® do not grow back.
What Can CoolSculpting® Treat?
Thanks to multiple applicators designed to target different parts of the body, the CoolSculpting® device can treat a wide range of areas where stubborn fat tends to be found.
Common applications include the abdomen, arms, upper back, beneath the buttocks (banana rolls), the sides (bra fat), flanks (love handles), thighs, and neck.
Keep in mind that CoolSculpting® is only for cosmetic results. It is not intended for improving health through weight loss. For that reason, anyone considering CoolSculpting® should be at or close to their ideal body weight for their height.
How Is CoolSculpting® Administered?
For a CoolSculpting® session, an applicator with specially designed panels will be placed directly against the area being treated for fat reduction. These panels will drop the temperature of the targeted fat, beginning cryolipolysis.
CoolSculpting® is performed as an outpatient procedure at our Thousand Oaks office. While you may experience a mild to intense cooling sensation and some pressure throughout your session, treatment time is often short, and patients typically settle in and relax for the duration. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their treatment.

Dr. Peterson Pierre
As a Stanford Medical School graduate and dermatologist certified by the American Board of Dermatology, Dr. Peterson Pierre ("the Gentle Injector") is a highly respected leader in the industry with a reputation for exceeding patient expectations.
There is no set downtime associated with CoolSculpting®, because there are no incisions to heal. You can return to normal activities right away. Some patients choose to return to work or other scheduled activities as soon as their CoolSculpting® session is over.
You should begin seeing a slimming effect develop gradually shortly after your CoolSculpting® treatment. While results will vary for each person—and even for different treatment areas on the same person—the reduced volume should be long lasting and natural looking.
To achieve and maintain the best results, a series of CoolSculpting® treatments may be required, with an expected volume reduction of about 20 percent per session.
Continuing to lead a healthy lifestyle is essential for maintaining your CoolSculpting® results.

Why Choose Pierre Skin Care Institute for CoolSculpting® in Thousand Oaks?
Dr. Peterson Pierre is a board-certified dermatologist who trained at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His extensive medical knowledge and experience extend through every aspect of his practice, including the treatments he offers and the people he chooses to administer them. He thoroughly researches every device before introducing it to his patients and ensures his team members are not simply trained in the basics of care, but are as committed to safety, natural results, and a beautiful patient experience as he is.
How Soon Do CoolSculpting® Results Appear and How Long Do They Last?
You may start to see changes to your body contours as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, but you will experience the most dramatic results after two months. Even after this milestone, your body will continue to flush out fat cells. The slimming can progress for up to four to six months after your CoolSculpting® session.
Because the fat cells are gone for good, they can’t grow again, even if your diet and exercise habits change. That said, the fat cells that remain can swell in size if given the opportunity. These may be fat cells in the treatment area, or they could be somewhere else on the body. It is important to maintain healthy habits in order to preserve your desired body contours.
Are There CoolSculpting® Side Effects to Watch For?
Common CoolSculpting® side effects include aching, numbness, and itchiness in the treatment area. These sensations can come and go in the weeks following a session, but should resolve on their own. Some patients also experience bruising or redness, swelling, and tenderness where the device was applied.
Dr. Pierre and his team are prepared to discuss these side effects and more at your consultation, so you can be aware of what to expect and be confident in your body-sculpting decision.
What Body Contouring Treatments Are Available Beyond CoolSculpting®?
In some cases, a look of flabbiness or fullness is due more to lax skin than pockets of fat. RF and ultrasound skin tightening can help to give these areas a firmer, sleeker appearance.
The Pierre Skin Care Institute team is experienced in working with patients who have a wide range of body types and cosmetic goals. A personalized consultation will allow us to determine whether excess fat, loose skin, or a combination of both are standing in the way of the contours you want.
