What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a common and chronic skin condition that most commonly affects middle-aged women with fair skin. The most common and best-known symptom is persistent redness of the cheeks and nose. The patient may also develop bumps that resemble pimples. About half of rosacea patients also develop red and irritated eyes. In rare cases, the skin on the nose becomes abnormally thick, so the nose becomes bulbous. This last symptom is more common in men.
How is it Treated?
Since other conditions, like lupus or psoriasis, can cause similar symptoms, our dermatologist in Thousand Oaks will start by performing tests to confirm the diagnosis of rosacea.
While there is not yet a cure for rosacea, there are treatments available at our office in Thousand Oaks that can control the symptoms. Researchers have identified triggers that can cause a flare-up or make it worse. Such triggers include the following:
• Temperature extremes
• Exposure to the sun
• Stress, including situations that make the patient blush
• Certain medications
• Strenuous exercise
Not all rosacea patients have the same triggers, so the patient and dermatologist will have to work together to identify the triggers. Various medications may be used to treat rosacea. These can be skin creams or oral medications. There are other treatments available as well. Oftentimes, a combination approach is needed to effectively relieve the symptoms.
