Kybella® vs. CoolSculpting®: Which is Best for a Double Chin?
Is your chin the part of you that you’re most self-conscious about? A defined, sculpted jawline and a toned neck are qualities that many men and women want for themselves, but it might not be easy to get this look because of weight gain or a weak bone structure due to genetics. Even though we tend to dread having a double chin, it’s really no more than some extra fat, some sagging skin, or both.
Double and even triple chins are a common problem that occur when layers of excess fatty tissue build up under the chin area. When enough fat accumulates there and a wrinkle forms below the bulk, that’s what makes the tissue look like an “extra” chin. CoolSculpting® and Kybella® are two treatments commonly used for double chin reduction at our Thousand Oaks practice.
Both options available at Pierre Skin Care Institute are effective at reducing fat, are non-surgical, can be finished in much less than an hour, are low risk, require little to no recovery time, and are followed by only minor side effects. That said, the treatments don’t work the same way.
Kybella® is an injectable that involves the use of deoxycholic acid to harm cell membranes so that they can no longer hold onto fat, which is then flushed out of the body.
CoolSculpting® typically involves positioning areas with pinchable fat between two applicator panels, which cool the tissue to a temperature that causes the fat cells to freeze. The body then gradually metabolizes the resulting crystallized fat.
Fat freezing is best for patients who are otherwise in good shape but have a teacup-sized amount of fat to lose below the chin. If they have either too much fat or not enough fat to fit into the applicator, another options would be a better choice. Kybella® can be ideal for patients with small areas of fat that CoolSculpting® can’t suction to.
