October 2nd is the International Day of Nonviolence. In an increasingly violent world, it's harder than ever to turn the other cheek. However, violence never solves anything. In addition, you become like your oppressors. We must endeavor to work together to bring about the changes our society so desperately needs. We don't seek revenge but rather justice and equal treatment.
The silver rule: Do not do unto others what you wouldn't want them to do to you, is a good starting point but the golden rule, as defined by Jesus, is far better: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Let Dr. Martin Luther King remind us that "In spite of temporary victories, violence never brings permanent peace. Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals."
