How to Use Hyaluronic Acid on Your Skin

Wondering if hyaluronic acid is really worth the hype? Many of the trendiest skin creams, serums, and other beauty products now contain this substance, but like many other skincare ingredients, people are often unsure of what it really is and how it’s beneficial. Sometimes thought of as “the body’s natural moisturizer,” hyaluronic acid is an essential chemical that is found in your skin and keeps it smooth and supple, much like the framework of collagen and elastin fibers that provide support. However, the main function of this transparent, gel-like substance is to moisturize the skin and prevent it from becoming dry, because it has the ability to absorb up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Although most of the facial fillers used at our Westlake Village-based practice contain hyaluronic acid, you can optimize your skin routine by also applying topical products that are made with this naturally sourced ingredient.

As we age, we need to replenish the moisture levels in the outer layers of the skin as the body begins to decrease its own hyaluronic acid production. Beware, though, that when this ingredient isn’t used properly, the skin can actually become more dehydrated than it was before. One of the major benefits of hyaluronic acid is that is tolerated well by any skin type.

In this post, we outline some simple tips for using hyaluronic acid the right way to get a more radiant complexion:

1. Choose products that have a low concentration (ideally, less than 2 percent) of hyaluronic acid. Although this might seem illogical, too much of the acid can have the opposite of the intended effect.

2. Don’t just use the product on its own. Pair it with other beneficial products, and be sure to apply them in the right order. Apply the hyaluronic acid serum first on slightly damp skin, then layer on a cream moisturizer and face oil to seal in the moisture.

3. Start with a DiamondGlow microdermabrasion treatment that opens the skin to enable hyaluronic acid to penetrate the surface more effectively.
